about me/
My name is Charles Lawrence. I’m a technical writer specializing in medical affairs. I am also an English Professor. I earned my MA in English-Technical Communication from the University of Central Florida (UCF), with a focus on medical rhetoric.
Clear Writing = Clear Thinking
Professional goal: To empower the medical community through effective communication. And empower students of the English language to become better writers and therefore, better thinkers.
My interest in medical communication comes from my experience living with a Multiple Sclerosis patient for many years. I also worked with the disabled at an employment non-profit. And I helped rehabilitate my elderly father at home after his partial hip replacement surgery.
While in graduate school, my independent study was focused on medical rhetoric. I composed two literature reviews. One discussed the history of medical rhetoric. The other examined the efficacy of YouTube physical therapy instructions from the perspective of the caregiver.
I also wrote an IRB as part of my human-subject involved thesis proposal. Although the proposal was abandoned, I am familiar with composing those sorts of academic research documents.
I’m a member of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA). I am also fully vaccinated and double boosted against COVID19.
I’m a highly competitive person who values integrity and directness, who makes bold decisions, and accepts responsibility for the consequences.
p.s. For those reviewing my resume, I followed my personal values wherever they led.
p.p.s. If I’m hired for a managerial position, I would like to be addressed as “Supreme Leader.”
reasons to hire me/
- Excellent writing skills.
- Understated, absurdist sense of humor.
- Meets all deadlines.
- Unpretentious.
- Keeps calm during chaos.
- I’ve taught middle school and high school and yet kept my sanity.
- I suspect that I’m Dorothy Parker, or Sophia Petrillo, reincarnated. If you don’t care for those sorts of personalities, then perhaps consider a candidate with the personality of an egg. (You might find a person like this on a Hallmark movie cast list).
- My formal life science training included dissecting a frog and a fetal pig in high school. I understand life sciences at a basic level and can look up medical terms. However, I feel the need to take a Khan Academy course when it comes to medical statistics.
a geeky thing i did once/
So several years ago, I started reading books by the late neurologist, Dr. Oliver Sacks. I also started watching old interviews and lectures by Dr. Sacks. Before he passed away, I wrote Dr. Sacks a note, asking for an autograph. He was kind enough to send me one. I figure every small act of geekiness brings me one step closer to earning my Starfleet badge for geekery.
